Noble Supporters

One day, a layman who has very good knowledge of the I Ching (Book of Changes) visited Gak Su Temple. After seeing the layout of the environment outside of the temple, he said...

Layman:  “Zen Master Dae Kwan, the layout of the outdoor environment here won’t bring you any noble supporters.”

Zen Master Dae Kwan:  “I am a noble supporter.”

Zen Master Dae Kwan then points to the sunims nearby:  “They are noble supporters.”

Zen Master Dae Kwan then says to the layman:  “You are also our noble supporter.”

Upon hearing this, everybody laughed.

While on a walk, Su Tung Po and Zen Master Fo Yin saw a stone statue of Horse-Face Kwan Seum Bosal with some prayer beads in his hands.

Su Tung Po was puzzled and asked Zen Master Fo Yin, “Who is it that Kwan Seum Bosal is praying to?”

Fo Yin replied, “Learning to help ourselves through the practice is better than praying to something outside of us for help.”

If you want support from noble supporters, then start with practicing yourself. Then all those around us who are willing to help are your noble supporters.
